Wispy translucent panels of captured pigment reference the high desert surroundings—flecks of colored light, dust saturated wind gusts, layers of textured surfaces, and a piecing clarity found in thin mountain air. Harnessing these qualities, Falling Skies asks visitors to patiently observe subtleties and shifts in the environment. Suspended in sheer screens around us, the material details encourage a slowness, where surroundings unfold gradually. At a time when screens have become an ever-present material condition of viewing, the way we look at the world and how we sense both the built and natural environment has been intimately, perhaps irreversibly, changed. This extends to how we sense and make sense of our built and natural environments, and our active participation in responding to the contemporary conditions we find ourselves in, rather than being overwhelmed by them.
