The Weathervane Series is an opportunity to culturally educate and share perspectives and lifeways through use of visual symbolism related to the weather. Not only historically, but also how these connected aspects continue to manifest in the present. The invitation to participate in this collaborative project was extended to students and local Indigenous Peoples, particularly members and friends of the Chiricahua Apache Nation, to present insights on increasingly extreme weather conditions and climate change and their impacts. Participants were asked to consider the form of weathervanes—their symbolism and function—and to use this basic construction as an outline for countering historical tropes with new approaches to image-making, storytelling, and creative expression that also raise awareness of natural balances that are being altered and how this affects all living things on Earth, including humans, animals, plants, and ecosystems.
