These paintings were left outside to dry on cracked surfaces of parched earth, were burnt by exposure to fire, sat in puddles until the liquid evaporated, were strung up against piercingly cold winds, or were pinned under sheets of ice until they melted. These methods embrace experimentation with the material itself and the creation of a more spontaneous aesthetic that directly references the ever-changing weather and atmospheric conditions. The seeming fragility of the overall installation serves as a reminder of the tenuousness with environmental conditions and the historical contributions to environmental damage in the Silver City area as well as current vulnerabilities to impacts from extreme heat, wildfire, drought, water scarcity, and other climate variability. With these aspects in mind, Windows of Opportunity encourages unfixed, changeable thinking and frames of mind, which can also be applied to considerations for providing sustainability and the best possible quality of life for both inhabitants and the environment.
